Think and Win like Dhoni Book Description
Think and Win like Dhoni talks about five success secrets to get ahead of your competitors using tips and tricks from the Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s life.
Sfurti Sahare is a motivational speaker and author of the best-selling book The Monkey Theory.
Think and Win like Dhoni Book Review
When we think of MS Dhoni, his unorthodox, out of the box thought process, decision-making, and leadership in pressure situations come foremost to our mind, all of which were in ample display during the Cricket World Cup in 2011. India became the first country to win a World Cup on home ground.
Naturally, there is curiosity about the secrets behind Captain Cool’s success, and the author has tried to tap this curiosity in her book.
His mental programming is the key. It’s his mind that is the differentiating factor between being successful and being a winner.
Sourav Ganguly
The book brings out five critical aspects of Dhoni’s way of thinking as being vital to achieving success in any field – right attitude, setting simple, small and achievable goals, following the process, living in the moment, and leadership skills.
The book, peppered as it is with cricketing anecdotes, makes it the come to life, allowing the reader to relate to the topics discussed. This strategy of using cricketing analogies is an excellent approach to make any subject accessible to the cricket crazy Indian population. Probably something for me to bear in mind should I feel like writing a self-help book in the future.
Sometimes a single sentence in a book can completely change our way of thinking about something, and I felt the same when I came across the author’s sentence ‘fear is an attitude.’ And after this book, I will always associate Dhoni’s favourite song “Mein pal do pal ky shayar hoon” to living in the present.
The author has interviewed stalwarts of Indian cricket like Ganguly, Kohli, and Captain Cool himself and has several quotes from them that shed light on the subject of Dhoni and his thinking processes.
The book uses simple language and is a fast-paced, easy read.
The author wrote Think and Win like Dhoni before The Monkey Theory (read my review of The Monkey Theory here). However, I read them in reverse chronological order. Both cover the subject of taking care of your mental processes and thinking to guide you to success.
I feel both books are worth a read and will help the reader who has not tried self-help books earlier. However, I liked Think and Win like Dhoni better. Its a must-read. As the author frequently says, ‘Try toh karo!’
Think and Win like Dhoni Quotes
Lets start with my favourite quote.
Fear is an attitude.
Nobody has seen ‘form’. It’s a state of mind where you are confident and you think very positively.
It’s not what happens to you. It’s how you react to it!
The situation is same for all, but reactions differ. This is the major difference between a performer and a non-performer.
Success is all about conditioning your mind.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
The author has quoted a few thinkers and famous people in her book, which I have included here.
Success is 99% attitude and 1% aptitude.
Celestine Chua
Attitude comes before talent.
Overcoming fear does not mean ignoring them or not acknowledging their presence.
“The first step is to acknowledge it,” Dhoni says. That dealt with, we need to do a little exercise: we need to mentally shove it into a box, close the lid tight, and keep it aside.
Aggression is a waste of time and energy.
…viewing pressure as a given opportunity to prove his merit and become a hero.
A goal is a dream with a deadline.
Napolean Hill
If you don’t have your own goal in your life, you will be spending the rest of your life fulfilling others
I keep it simple. I do not like to crowd my mind with too many thoughts. That gives me space in my mind to strategize it as per requirement.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
When passion drives you, opportunity can never be an issue – either you have them or you create them.
To follow the process would be to focus on preparation.
Luck is not a solo job. It is a combination of hard work, commitment and the right mix of attitude.
A very Zen quote below
Every event is the sum total of its moments. To live, is to be able to experience each of these moments.
I see pressure as an opportunity to do well. If you are under pressure you should not see it as a danger and give in to it.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
Sfurti Sahare is clearly hinting at her next book, The Monkey Theory: Conquer Your Mental Chatter, with this quote 🙂
Mind is a monkey refusing to stay put in a place for more than a few seconds.
Happiness is not a name of a place where he needs to reach. Rather, it is a process.
It’s not how well you begin, but how beautifully you finish a job decides a winner.
It’s a funny thing about life – If you refuse to accept Anything but the best, You very often get it!
W. Somerset Maugham
